"The main director of Lacorine is Peruvian by birth, English by naturalisation. Lacorine has conducted a survey of different factories, large and small, which paid careful regard to the working conditions of the workers.
Lacorine has selected manufacturers that provide work to some of the poorest women workers in Lima in conditions that are conducive to their health and safety.
It is one of Lacorine’s prime concerns that these workers are paid a fair wage and treated fairly -- and this is a requirement of Lacorine’s contract with its manufacturer.
The workers are very poor ladies who are paid a living wage and who (together with their families) would otherwise simply starve. There is no formal social security in Peru as there is in the UK. The healthcare of each worker and each worker’s personal needs are the manufacturer’s direct concern ensuring that workers have medical treatment as necessary. There is no National Health Service in Peru. Working conditions are safe and healthy. There is no child or forced labour or exploitation.
Lacorine is obligated to provide and has provided substantial moneys for the business to use in developing production and machinery to make the jobs of the workers more secure and to improve their wages and working conditions generally." |
